Government looking at options for Australians wanting to leave the occupied Palestinian territories All our political leadership, put the politics away. They’ve sent a very clear message around the country that politicians of all sides need to do better and need to be better.Įveryone’s ready to get to work. Stewart said he believed Australians now had “a stronger baseline of the challenges Aboriginal people are facing across this country” – and strongly rejected the idea that no voters had opposed the referendum based only on racism. That mechanism isn’t in play any more, the Australian people have voted it down, we’ve got to look at another way forward. We have to get to work today and start chipping away. The issues were here yesterday, they’re here today, they’ll be there tomorrow. They’ve sent a very clear message to our politicians, two simple words, do better – we have to look at how we improve the lives of our people. “The Australian people have gone to the polls and voted on 92 words that potentially a lot of them didn’t understand, but importantly they didn’t see that as the way through,” he told ABC radio this morning. Stewart, a Nira illim bulluk man of the Taungurung nation, said the nation needed to find a new way forward after the voice was rejected. Yes campaigner Marcus Stewart says the voice referendum result has brought attention to issues in Indigenous communities, reflecting on the result by saying Australians were asking politicians to “do better”. Yes campaigner says result shows people want politicians to ‘do better’ Police estimate 6,000 people attended the gathering in Hyde Park while another 10,000 people marched through Melbourne in support of Palestine. He described the gathering in Hyde Park as “largely peaceful” and confirmed the hundreds of police officers who were deployed did not make any arrests.Īsked if earlier talk of shutting down the protest and police’s plans to enact the special powers seemed like an overreaction in hindsight, Cooke said: “Absolutely not.”Īnd to be frank people have listened, so there were people in that crowd today who were providing the voice of reason to their own members of community, which is exactly what we would expect. The New South Wales police have confirmed they did not enact extraordinary powers that would have permitted them to search protesters without reason and arrest and charge people who refuse to identify themselves at a pro-Palestine rally.Īssistant commissioner Tony Cooke said he ultimately did not consider it necessary to authorise the powers. That’s around closing the gap, recommit to the closing the gap process. I think the one thing all sides agreed on was that Indigenous disadvantage is the top issue. The third thing, we need to commit to reconciliation. I think we need to be slow to move to the next phase or next referendum without that reflection.Īs we know, what are some of the key ingredients to a referendum on this: You need to build Indigenous support, bipartisan support and it needs to be at a time when it has the best chance of success. Secondly, I think we need to reflect on what the actual result means. This is not a result about whether Australians support Indigenous people or not, it’s a referendum on a particular model of constitutional recognition. A number of them will be feeling the result yesterday. I think just in the days ahead, the first thing is three things: To reach out to Indigenous friends and colleagues and check in on them. So what happens now, according to Julian Leeser: 01.01 CEST Government needs to ‘recommit to closing the gap’, Leeser says After that the investors took fright and funding dried up, no doubt because Dropbox and other file sync and share startups were raising hundreds of millions of dollars, outspending and out-marketing Bitcasa on a galactic scale.īitcasa then continued messing users about. The company was started by CEO Tony Gauda to offer infinite public cloud storage for $10/month in 2011 and had $1.5m of seed funding, followed by a 2012 $7m A-round and a November 2013 $13m B-round. This is a company that punched its customers in the face again and again as it struggled with its miscalculations and misconceptions around cloud storage, so much so that investors effectively gave up and left it with funding starvation and a management team that went its own sweet - and seemingly wrong - way. It's somehow typical of Bitcasa that it can't even announce its own demise or acquisition simply. There was a rumour that Intel had bought it, quickly denied by Intel. We remain optimistic that, before long (and though you may not realize it), Bitcasa’s technology will yet contribute significantly to fulfilling this mission. We have no doubt that Bitcasa has found the right home to fulfill a mission that has driven the company from its 2011 beginnings – to eliminate the storage and computing limitations of your connected devices, however small, in the most secure and efficient way possible. Thanks to the very hard work, generosity and persistence of a number of folks – from employees to investors and advisors – Bitcasa and its platform have become a part of something much, much bigger. Recipe developer and cookbook author Andy Baraghani swears by the Zwilling Madura, too, noting its lightweight design and flared lip that make it easy to toss ingredients. I also love that the handle stays cool to the touch, which is obviously not the case with every pan.” “I still try to be cautious when flipping things with my metal fish spatula, tongs, and slotted spoon, but even when I’ve scraped the pan accidentally, I’ve never seen a scratch on the surface. “I love that it’s technically safe for metal utensils, something that I’ve always considered a nonstick no-no,” says recipe developer and writer Rebecca Firkser. The Zwilling Madura hits this sweet spot, and in many people’s opinions, it’s the way to go. Bottom line: I wouldn’t spend much more than $100 on something that will inevitably need to be replaced, but I also wouldn’t spend too little on a random pan that is bound to fall apart after only a year or two (if not sooner). It should be a workhorse - frying and scrambling eggs, crisping up fish skin and leftover rice, griddling pancakes, gently toasting spices - but one you don’t have to be overly precious about. But after years of cooking in my own kitchen - many with this pan - as well as some very thorough research, I think it’s safe to say what you want is a moderately priced nonstick. Material: Nonstick | Maintenance: Dishwasher safe | Weight: Lightweightįor a long time, it was a fact in my mind that you shouldn’t spend too much money on a nonstick skillet because - unlike cast iron and stainless steel - they are not meant to last forever. “All you have to do is clean them up,” she says. For something so useful, the price is already seriously low, but Lani Halliday, founder and owner of Brutus Bakeshop, notes that you can often find them even cheaper at thrift shops, yard sales, and antique stores. “It always comes in handy and never disappoints,” adds New Orleans–based chef and restaurateur Alon Shaya. “This pan will last you forever,” says Daniel Cutler, co-owner and chef of Ronan in Los Angeles. But professional chefs are just as devoted. It’s the most common cast iron you’ll see regular home cooks using: Strategist senior writer Liza Corsillo said it was the very best thing she bought in the entirety of the last decade, and I use mine so often it has taken up permanent residence on my front left burner. And while there are many companies that make cast-iron cookware ( Butter Pat Industries and Smithey are two we’ve written about before), none is more beloved than the incredibly affordable, durable, and dependable Lodge. (Lodge cookware comes pre-seasoned, which is a great bonus, but it might require some upkeep over the years.) You can sear, sauté, braise, fry, and bake with it. As a material, cast iron can pretty much do it all: get really hot and retain that heat, go from the stove to oven, and hold a nonstick surface if seasoned properly. But really, if you only had to cook with this single one for the rest of your life, you’d be pretty okay. Material: Cast iron | Maintenance: Hand wash and keep well-seasoned | Weight: HeavyĬhoosing a best overall skillet is easier than you might expect given the vastly different categories I laid out above. But with nearly every one on this list, you can go bigger or smaller. One note: For consistency, I’ve mostly linked to skillets that are approximately ten inches (it’s a middle-ground size that works well for most dishes in households where you’re generally cooking for two to four people). But if you’re starting from scratch or doing a full-on refresh, it’s worth a full read through to make sure you end up with a well-rounded, hard-working assortment. If you’re simply looking to fill a hole in your collection and know what you want, you can jump to any section by clicking the quick links below. Is it better to go with a classic brand or take a chance on a newly beloved direct-to-consumer company? When it comes to such an essential tool, is it always worth it to splurge? How many do you really need in total? There’s no one answer to each of these questions because the cookware you own should ultimately be a reflection of how you personally operate in the kitchen - something I’ve tried to help you think through here (with the recommendations of many pros, of course). And then within each type, there are also a lot of options. There are, after all, several types - cast iron, enameled cast iron, carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, and nonstick, most of which I use on a weekly (if not daily) basis to cook well and efficiently. It should be said up top: Skillets is a broad category. War Thunder is based around combined arms battles on air, land, and sea. Initially, Gaijin claimed after the game was announced that it was an April Fools joke before confirming its existence in June that same year. A spinoff game called War Thunder Mobile (also known as War Thunder Edge ) was released in May 2023 for Android, with an iOS version released in August 2023.ĭeveloped as a " flying simulation game", it was previously named War Thunder: World of Planes, but due to its similarity with Wargaming's World of Warplanes, it was changed to its present name in 2012. It has a cross-platform format for Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Oculus, and Vive. Announced in 2011, it was first released in November 2012 as an open beta with a worldwide release in January 2013 it had its official release on 21 December 2016. War Thunder is a free-to-play vehicular combat multiplayer video game developed and published by Gaijin Entertainment. Action, vehicular combat, combat flight simulator I think the most time I spent in a single fight was about two minutes. There are a lot of different enemies to fight in the game, but combat never becomes a slog. A big enough stat difference will neuter either side. Stats are the name of the game when it comes to combat. Action Points or AP is consumed to use your class’s special skills. There is a huge variety of items that you can use in battle to help turn the tables. Fights are turn-based between your side and the enemy. West of Loathing’s combat was designed around quick battles. While we have been talking about the story and aesthetics, West of Loathing is no slouch in combat. Some of the enemy designs and environments are amazing to see brought to stick figure life. I had to laugh out loud a few times from the crazy writing and situations that can happen in the game. It’s very easy to tell who is going to win a fight From the descent into spittoons, to fighting all manner of skeletons, the game keeps you invested in its stick figure world. West of Loathing’s combination of storytelling and aesthetic certainly make it greater than the sum of its parts. You may think that the lack of voice acting and stick figure aesthetic would hurt West of Loathing, but the game is a great example that a great aesthetic is not held to graphical power. While the game does have an endpoint, there are a ton of sidequests and points of no returns to make repeated visits different. Muscles, Mysticality and Moxic will affect not just combat, but potential options throughout the world. As with Kingdom of Loathing, everything is built on your stats. You’ll choose from three classes which will determine your stat focus and unlockable abilities. Your quest is to leave the confines of your family’s farm to head into the Wild West for fame, fortune, and to make as many jokes as possible. All you need to know is that cows have gone evil, meat is money, and everybody is a stick figure. You don’t need to have a background in Kingdom of Loathing to play West of Loathing. And yet, the game not only turned out great, but may be one of my favorite RPGs this year. And there was some surprise on my part that the developer was interested in moving into the single player RPG genre with West of Loathing. The Kingdom of Loathing has been a surprising hit in the free to play market for now over a decade.
